Highway Technician --Grundy Center

Location: Grundy Center Maintenance Garage

This position operates equipment/performs physical activities in the maintenance of roadway, roadside, right of way, shoulder, bridge and highway grading/paving projects; during construction season, performs routine technical (e.g., checking grades/elevations, sampling, testing and inspecting construction materials) and survey, field/lab tests and inspection duties; collects, classifies and reports project data. Performs duties related to snow and ice removal.

Lifting
:
Ability to perform heavy work, occasionally (1-33% of the time) lifting/lowering, carrying and pushing/pulling various items/using force from 50 - 100 lbs. Team lift or mechanical assist recommended for weights over 75 lbs.

CDL
:
Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Instruction Permit upon hire. Within 14 calendar days following appointment, a valid Class A CDL must be obtained and maintained with air brake and tanker endorsements.

Requires a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer’s random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program. Requires certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment.

Additional Requirements: *Post offer, pre-employment physical. *Within 5 months of appointment, must reside within 30 minutes driving time, during normal conditions, from assigned work location. *Must respond to emergency situations as required. Must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.

Travel: Some overnight travel may be required.

Shift: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., hours may vary; subject to call 24 hours a day during emergency conditions.

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school, or G.E.D. and two years of full-time highway maintenance and equipment operation work, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing.

Mechanic - Muscatine Maintenance Garage

Performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of all motorized and non-motorized equipment such as diesel and gasoline powered automotive equipment; performs related work as required. Other Duties as assigned, such as but not limited to: 1.Trains and directs employees in proper operations and maintenance of equipment.2.Coordinates work with district mechanics, supervisors, managers, and others regarding equipment maintenance support, modifications, vehicle accidents and research projects. 3. Buildings/yard upkeep and maintenance. 4. Accepting responsibility in the absence of supervisor or crew leader. 5. Special assignments. Works and communicates with internal/external customers, vendors and general public to secure parts, information technical support, etc. to repair/maintain the departments fleet and facilities. Also responds to inquiries/concerns from the public. Must be available to respond to emergency calls and situations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions. The employee must reside within 30 minutes driving time (normal driving conditions) from the assigned work station. Compliance with this residency requirement will be determined by the selecting authority (not to exceed 5 months.)

This position performs skilled mechanical overhaul and repair work on gasoline and diesel engines, and related automobile and industrial equipment, and repairs and rebuilds hydraulic jacks, pumps and cylinders. This person will be required to perform snow removal operations and other equipment operator duties during emergency situations. CDL/License
: Positions in this job class in the Department of Transportation must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License Instruction Permit upon hire. Within 14 calendar days following appointment, a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained with air brake and other required endorsements in order to continue employment.

Physical
:
Prior to starting employment all persons are required to have a post offer, pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.

Lifting: Some heavy lifting is required, the ability to lift and load items weighing up to 95 pounds to the height of 55 inches above the ground.

Travel
: Some overnight travel may be required. Employees must be available to travel and may be required to stay away from home overnight during assignments. Shift: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., hours may vary and subject to call 24 hours a day during emergency conditions.

Transportation Engineer Intern (Office of Bridges and Structures) AMES

Bridge Rating Unit -- Office of Bridges and Structures.

The transportation engineer intern classification is the entry level classification in the professional engineering work force of the DOT. The positions in this class are typically filled by persons recently graduated from engineering colleges with degrees in civil or construction engineering. Occasionally persons with several years of related experience may be hired into the class since the scope of the class ranges from the newly degreed person to the person who has achieved professional licensure.

This is an entry level, full-time, permanent engineering position in the office of Bridges and Structures, working primarily in the Bridge Rating Unit.

This individual will be tasked with performing structural analyses on bridges located on the state highways systems. This includes assuring bridges are posted or closed when necessary. The structural analyses are required by federal regulation and are used for permitting heavy load vehicles across the state.

The individual will also review bridge inspection documentation and make recommendations on bridge maintenance. The individual will need experience in bridge inspection as related to the National Bridge Inspection Standards.

This position includes performing bridge inspections to determine deterioration levels and maintenance needs. A high level of technical and professional ability is needed to assess the bridge’s condition and recommend repairs.

This position involves assisting with emergency repair needs. This may include estimating repair materials and their associated costs.

The individual will work with counties, cities, and consultants regarding methods of bridge analysis and other bridge related matters in the absence of the Bridge Rating Engineer.

Shift: Monday through Friday; 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Special Requirement: Engineering intern certificate within 18 months of hire/license within 9 years.

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited four year college or university OR possession of a Verification of Graduation with major course work in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural or transportation engineering, or in engineering management. (Hires made with the Verification of Graduation will require graduation from the college or university within 10 months of hire.)
