Highway Maintenance Supervisor (Cedar Rapids Garage)

Location: Cedar Rapids Maintenance Garage

This position serves as the Maintenance Supervisor for the Cedar Rapids Maintenance Garage. Responsibility encompasses supervision of 13 personnel and the routine and emergency maintenance of approximately 230 lane miles of primary roadway. These maintenance areas consist within Linn County. The Highway Maintenance Supervisor at this location supervises and evaluates work of subordinate personnel, plans maintenance activities within budgetary limitations, inspects highways within the area to determine the maintenance needs, prioritizes and assigns work activities based on needs and standards, ensures the proper maintenance and operation of equipment, makes requisitions and arranges for the storage and use of materials required for the repair of highways and equipment, determines the need for emergency highway maintenance activities, ensure the proper maintenance of facilities, and maintains communication and coordination with the District Maintenance Office. The Highway Maintenance Supervisor at the location reports to the District Maintenance Manager.

Applicants for this position must be available to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day, must have the ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions day or night.

CDL:  Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Instruction Permit upon hire. Within 14 calendar days following appointment, a valid Class A CDL must be obtained and maintained with air brake and tanker endorsements.

Other Requirements: A pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer’s random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.

Travel: Some overnight travel may be required

Shift: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, M-F, hours may vary with occasional overtime required. Subject to be on-call 24 hours a day during emergency conditions, including nights/weekends/holidays.

Minimum Qualifications: Experience equal to eight years of full-time highway maintenance work, highway construction work or highway materials inspections work.

Transportation Engineer Specialist (Sioux City)

The position of Staff Engineer (Transportation Engineer Specialist) is an essential part of the District 3 engineering team. A Staff Engineer is responsible for developing highway improvement and preservation projects as well as being part of multidisciplinary project teams for the development of larger transportation projects in District 3.

The work this position performs includes developing concepts, completing cost estimates and financial plans, conducting field exams, participating in public meetings, preparing project plans, conducting plan reviews, developing agreements and providing engineering expertise to complete these tasks. The types of projects that this position will be responsible for developing will include highway reconstruction, HMA and PCC overlays, small drainage structures, highway preservation and maintenance, and emergency repair work.

The work on the project management teams will include providing input on project development, participating in public meetings, working with other DOT offices and consultants on project staging and plan development, reviewing plans, gathering information needed for plan development, and working with local agencies on agreements and project coordination.

This position serves as a technical resource to others in the district. This will include working with Engineering Operation Technicians on permits for work in the ROW, access permits and drainage issues. Maintenance and construction staff will also work with the individual in this position as a resource to obtain additional engineering information to solve problems that are on construction projects or discovered in the field.

Often the staff engineer will be the Department of Transportation’s initial contact with the general public, businesses, law enforcement, consultant and other governmental agencies. The staff engineer will be required to provide information, attend meetings, answer questions and represent the department in a professional manner.

An individual in this position will present technical information, program plans, and proposals to higher levels of management and other agencies, and the public to obtain cooperation, acceptance, support, resolution and understanding of DOT activities in District 3.

This position requires an understanding of engineering principles in design, hydrology and traffic engineering. An understanding and the ability to communicate department policies regarding design, project development, drainage, utilities, entrance permits and highway maintenance is required. The ability to effectively utilize computers and engineering software is needed. The ability to conduct field work for the development of projects is required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required to convey needed information to customers inside and outside the DOT.

The position reports to the Assistant District Engineer.

Special Requirements: This position requires licensure by the Iowa Board of Engineering Examiners as a Professional Engineer. This licensure must be valid and in good standing at the time of hire and be maintained for employment.

License: A valid driver’s license must be possessed and maintained.

Travel: Occasional overnight travel will be required.

Shift: Monday through Friday, 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM

Minimum Qualifications: Licensed as a professional engineer, and the equivalent of two years of full-time professional level transportation or related civil engineering experience.  Must have, or prior to appointment, must obtain an active Iowa professional engineering license through the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau – Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Board.

Performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of all motorized and non-motorized equipment such as diesel and gasoline powered automotive equipment; performs related work as required. Buildings/yard upkeep and maintenance. 4. Accepting responsibility in the absence of supervisor or crew leader. 5. Special assignments. Works and communicates with internal/external customers, vendors and general public to secure parts, information technical support, etc. to repair/maintain the departments fleet and facilities. Also responds to inquiries/concerns from the public. Must be available to respond to emergency calls and situations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions. The employee must reside within 30 minutes driving time (normal driving conditions) from the assigned work station. Compliance with this residency requirement will be determined by the selecting authority (not to exceed 5 months.)
